The Kelley Dean's Council
A bridge between our School and the Business World......
Established in 1972 under the leadership of Dean Schuyler F. Otteson, the Dean's Council provides advice,
counsel, and support to the Dean of the Kelley School of Business and serves as the key interface between the School's faculty and its
business constituency. Since its inception the Council has grown in stature and size and today consists of 162 leading business practitioners
dedicated to an effective and meaningful dialogue between themselves and the School's faculty and administrators.
Aid & advise the Dean
Council members aid the Dean of the Kelley School in defining and realizing the institutional goals of Indiana University, and serve as ongoing consultants to the Kelley School and Indiana University as strategies, programs, and curricula are revised and created. Council members also provide general advice regarding student programs and activities. Given its membership of outstanding worldwide business leaders and its unique practitioner perspective, the Council offers valuable advice, counsel, and support to the Dean in his decision-making role. The Council's advisory role has been especially useful in the formulation and development of long-range plans, proposed new programs, fresh curriculum thrusts, research directions, and private-sector funding.
Provide an Interface Between the School and the Business Community
Council members keep the Kelley School abreast of timely trends, changes, and developments in business so that the School continues to quickly incorporate "real world" issues into its curricula. Council members identify opportunities for partnerships between faculty and the business community for the purposes of promoting mutual gain through such activities as student recruiting and consulting arrangements, involving faculty members in practical business problems, arranging for guest lecturers from industry, supporting state-wide outreach operations, and bringing students into direct contact with business executives and their ideas. The Council serves in an important capacity by keeping the School's programs, departments, and personnel responsive to the dynamic, changing needs of the business community. The Council plays an active role in identifying important new business skills, knowledge, and research needs; recommending vehicles to meet initial and continuing business education needs; and making the faculty aware of real world management issues and problems via participation in faculty business internship and executive-in-residence programs. As a group, Council members will serve as a forum for the exchange of points of view between business executives and academicians as they relate to advancing business education and business research.
Promote the Kelley School to its Various Constituencies
The Kelley School Dean's Council members function as ambassadors for the School and utilize their experience and insight to develop and support ways and means of advancing the presence of the Kelley School in the state of Indiana, the region, the nation, and around the world. The Council, recognizing that the key to quality university graduates is quality faculty and facilities, actively assists the School in obtaining support from the University's central administration, its trustees, the state legislature, the business community, and the general public by making these various audiences aware of the School's teaching programs, research output, and service activities.
Assist in Fundraising Programs
Given the critical need for private funds to augment state appropriations and tuition revenues, the School has, for many years, sought gifts and bequests from various individual and corporate donors. The Council plays an important conceptual role in enhancing these fundraising efforts by assisting in formulating effective strategies, identifying appealing projects, developing effective tactics, identifying likely contributors, evaluating potential prospects, making key contacts, and helping organize regional and national drives. Involved in fundraising for other charitable causes, many Council members contribute substantial expertise to the School's endowment and annual fundraising efforts.
Members of the Dean's Council are also expected to participate in the School's fundraising campaigns at both personal and, when applicable, corporate levels. The personal philanthropy of the Dean's Council and its influence in attracting other gifts to the Kelley School have been of paramount importance to the overall fiscal success of the Kelley School, year-in and year-out. The membership of the Council has been actively involved in virtually all Kelley School-related fundraising programs and continues to be a critical component in what has become one of Indiana University's most celebrated unit development programs.
